PROJECTS

CAPACITY BUILDING FOR PEOPLE FROM UPROOTED COMMUNITY PROJECT (CBPUC)

Background

There are many villages in the vicinity surrounding the small town of Sangkhlaburi. Most of the people in this area are members of the Mon and Karen ethnic groups and have likely crossed the border into Thailand due to the civil war. or were born from those that have done so. In this area, there are various organizations that have been established to provide basic services to help those in need, such as providing a basic educational curriculum, and the community engages these organisations by training/working as teachers or social workers.

Previously, these villages had skillful teachers, but now so many of these teachers have resettled into third Countries. Those who are currently teaching along the border are primary teachers and they lack basic teaching skills. And without these teachers, the children living within the refugee community cannot get an education. On the other hand, the teachers are not educated to an advanced level, so students do not receive an advanced level of education and cannot compete with students from larger towns. Because of this, teachers need more skills to provide a sufficient level of education to their students.

At the same time, those who are working as social workers strive to meet the needs of their communities, but they struggle in administrative duties such as providing adequate reports to the organizations that support them.  Moreover, they need management skills and they need to know how to prepare a financial report to document their performance systematically.  Nowadays, without the ability to speak English it is very difficult to communicate with each other effectively.

To improve their service, teachers and social workers will need more resources to be effective in their jobs. They need the training in essentials skills such as proposal writing in order to seek funding for their projects. They also need computer skills to be able to prepare proposals and reports, and they also need to further their knowledge and understanding of English.  These teachers and social workers currently lack the opportunity pursue such training.

Goal

To improve the borderline teachers' teaching skills and to build up the borderline social workers' capacities by:

  1. Learning how to find resources for increasing their personal knowledge and the knowledge of their students or community members.

  2. Becoming conversant in the English language, verbally and in written form.

  3. Learning to utilize computer programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, electronic messaging and Internet research.

  4. Improving their ability to accomplish management tasks, such as goal-setting, planning, report writing and financial reporting.
